Dawnz top 20 Albums of 2012: Post 1
These are in no particular order…
There are some I enjoy more than others, but all of these deserve a listen or two!1. Halcyon by Ellie Goulding
This album is unreal. I still listen to it every single day..
*Listen to Only You and Figure 82. Threads by Now Now
This band is so therapeutic for me, but this record especially… It’s perfect for a snowy day.. Chris Walla was smart in signing/recording this band.
*Listen to Prehistoric, Separate Rooms & Thread3. Hannah Georgas by Hannah Georgas
I was lucky to be introduced to this lovely lady sometime in 2011, and when this record came out, I was ecstatic! She’s such a good songwriter and she collaborated with some really awesome people - The drummer from Wintersleep and Ryan Guldemond from Mother Mother… So good!
* Listen to Shortie, Fantasize & Enemies4. Dark Eyes by Half Moon Run
When this album came out, I probably listened to it a million times.. I’m still not sick of it… Who can record an entire first half of an album with no snare drum and have it NOT be boring? This band! They’re Canadian and they took the same program at Fanshawe as me… Pretty neat to see some great talent come from there. Plus they’ve done some amazing tours this year already… Opening for Metric!? Come on :)
*Listen to Full Circle, Call Me In The Afternoon & Judgement.5. Deep Space by Eisley
How can I not like something this band releases? They’re all brilliant..
*Listen to Lights Out and Deep Space6. Melt by Young Magic
So many good bands came out of Brooklyn this year. This band is one of them.. I heard Sparkly earlier on in the year and I couldn’t believe the sound this band captured. I was able to catch them at Canadian Music Week in March as well…They are just as brilliant live..
*Listen to Sparkly and Slip Time7. A Minor Bird by Sucre
This lady DuPree deserves praise.. Her and her husband (The drummer from Mute Math) decided to put out this record, and start a family all at the same time. This record has so many layers, keeping each song unpredictable and intriguing. It’s also one of the best produced albums I’ve heard all year.. Great job Stacy King ;)
*Listen to When We Were Young, Chemical Reaction and Say Something8. The North by Stars
I’ve listened to this band since I was in high school, and I’ve always loved their songwriting and composition. This record is fun and smart and still captures who they are as a band from Toronto… They deserve so much recognition - I hope when they do their worldwide tour in the spring people will catch on to how crazy good this band is..
* Listen to Hold On When You Get Love And Let Go When You Give It, and Light Changing Colour9. The Only Place by Best Coast
Bethany, I love you. You have brought California to my cold wintery apartment.
*Listen to The Only Place, Why I Cry and Last Year10. The Perks of Being A Wallflower Original Motion Picture SoundtrackWorking with placing music in film, it’s hard for me not to fall in love with at least one… This book is great, and it’s probably one of the first films that’s almost identical to the book (which let’s face it, once Hollywood get’s a hold of an idea like this, they run wild with it and it changes drastically). The music (which is also part of the written story) was perfectly placed :) Nice job Alexandra Patsavas!
* Listen to Perly-Dewdrops’ Drops, Could It Be Another Change and Come on Eileen*Check out Part Two post HERE -
4. Thread- Now Now
It’s too obvious that this band is an influence. The down stroking guitars and soft vocals is what wins my heart over. The guitar parts they come up with are always killer and Cacie perfects her vocal melodies on top of that. The lyrics kill me too. They leave so much up for interpretation and I love that. Just everything about this is ear candy.
